Special Workshop Offered For Actors And Artists
Surrounded by the soft glow of candle light, a small group of individuals sit gathered in a circle. Their eyes are closed. They are gently breathing through their mouths in unison. Slow breath in, slow breath out. Slow breath in, slow breath out. After five minutes, Sherly Sulaiman, BA, ICBCH, asks the visibly relaxed group to open their eyes.
“How did that make you feel?” asks Sulaiman.
Founder of the New Stress Relief, Sulaiman is a certified clinical hypnotherapist and Neuro-Linguistic Programming practitioner. Her professional practice involves sitting with patients, understanding the nature of their problems, evaluating their physical and emotional suggestibility, and combining therapeutic and relaxation techniques to create individualized conditioning for each patient that provides long term and lasting resolutions. In addition to over 15 years of experience in her clinical practice, Sulaiman is also a certified yoga instructor who has lead classes at facilities including Up Dog Yoga, Liberation Yoga, and other private settings.
Recently, Sulaiman has brought her expertise to a monthly workshop entitled “Mindfulness for Actors and Artists.” Held in the outskirts of Westwood, Sulaiman provides an inviting atmosphere filled with cheerful orchids, a slight hint of incents and light refreshments. As participants enter, they are welcomed and presented the opportunity to mingle before taking a seat in a circle outlined by flickering candles. Suliaman begins the workshop with a brief group introduction where she defines the benefit one can achieve by being mindful: of their surroundings, their physicality, their emotions and the thoughts their mind is transmitting.
Sulaiman cultivates a state of mindfulness through a number of breathing exercises aimed at calming the mental influences and defining inner focus. After each exercise Suliaman asks the participants to share whatever feedback or comments they feel comfortable vocalizing that define the emotions, thoughts or feelings they experienced.
“Meditation does not mean we do not think,” said Suliaman. “Even the Dali Lama has said it is impossible to not think. What we want to do is acknowledge our thoughts without judgment.”
Understanding responses to environment can influence one’s creative response to situations. Likewise, awareness and acceptance can greatly influence an actor’s ability to pass or fail an audition. Suliaman’ s goal in these special workshops geared towards creative individuals is to help participants embark on a path where they can be aware and responsive to their thoughts and perceptions and not ruled by them. Suliaman encourages group participation; a method that exposes to each individual how similar each person is in their awareness, insecurities, triumphs and successes.
“We are all able to learn from each other,” said Suliaman. “It’s important for us all to know we share many of the same feelings, even if we are experiencing them in very unique ways.”
Mindfulness for the Actor and the Artist occurs the last weekend of every month. The next Mindfulness for the Actor and the Artist will take place will take place at the end of July (date TBA). For updates on the event, please visit:
